What makes Meryem a wonderful human: She is a kind soul. Some people radiate kindness and she is one of those ladies.
I was introduced to Meryem at Dar Bennis in Fez by her brother.
Before we arrived in Fez we approached Dar Bennis asking them if they could offer a cooking class. It is very typical for tourist to have someone cook for them inside the dar, but less common for a family to request a cooking class. As most of you know, we are not like most families and we are huge foodies so it only seemed appropriate. When you can learn to cook from a local with a heart of gold and some fancy skills why would you pass it up?
Not only did we get an opportunity to hang out with an amazing lady for an entire evening we learned how to cook our favorite Moroccan dishes as well. Meryem entertained my gazillion questions with patience, did not mock my lack of local cooking knowledge and made me laugh. She is one funny lady and if you saw her knife skills you would say she is tough as well. She cut every veggie with a knife and her bare hand, no cutting board at all.
I have said it before and I will say it again. Women, moms, daughters, we are all the same across the globe. We spent the evening talking about our children, being a mom, our dreams, our partners and even our regrets. We laughed, we learned and I might have even shed a tear of happiness when I tasted the meal later that evening.
In addition to the dinner, she cooked two breakfasts and on the last one I convinced her to join us with our friend Samia for a morning chat. I will remember that morning, sitting in Dar Bennis with a 20 something, a 30 something, Will and myself discussing life. The conversation was free flowing, candid and so incredibly honest.
If you find yourself in Fez you must take a class or two with Meryem!
